Ed Blackburn is the sage of UNT painting and drawing department. His work plays in the Pop world with a political and social bent through comic book iconography which was perfect reflection of the last 8 years. After all we were fighting 'evil doers' and the Bush Presidency saw things in black and white. He also made works from old cowboy movie clips and religious imagery. Most of his body of work is about this problem of duality and our tendency to over simplify issues. As a professor, he was able to clarify exactly what you wanted to say and in more eloquent wording. He is a sage, because every word he says about art has this extra weight and truth. Artist Howard Sherman calls him a 'genius' and I would have to agree.Tuesday, May 04, 2010

Todd,
Thanks so much for your comments about Ed Blackburn. He's always been one of my favorite artists, and one of my favorite people. He wasn't able to teach me to be a very good painter (that's probably my fault) but he gave me alot of other things that I'm grateful for. I'm really glad to know he's a Sage in your book. Thanks for your post.
