Sara Ishii

A great painter that came out of the University of Texas at Dallas is Sara Ishii. I could kick myself, because I could have bought a piece of her work before she left to Canada. Her work has always been hauntingly beautiful. The top image is an early work based on her beauty series and the bottom image is more recent. Both question traditions of beauty. The top image followed a lot of her work which showed women covering up with make-up or distortion through extreme close-ups. Ishii and Christi Nielsen were in a group show at the gallery I curated years ago. A few months later she had a show at the university and she nearly sold the whole show. She starts with photography and Ishii takes those images and filters them through Photoshop. Ishii then, applies layers of paint until the painted surface has a highly textured look. No doubt, Ishii, like me, was heavily influenced by artist/professor at UTD, John Pomara. She has also had a great little video at the Dallas Contemporary.
